Why: Long before there was Lux Interior, shock rock pioneer Screamin’ Jay Hawkins was deranging audiences with performances that ranged from sensational to insane. He was even known to perform his scatological goof “Constipation Blues” with an onstage toilet. I’m not sure where the possessed rendition (at right) of his only major hit, “I Put a Spell on You,” comes from, but you’ll probably never see it on television these days, especially in the United States.

Hawkins’ performances were as wild as rumors about his past. And you can blindfold yourself and chuck a dart at Hawkins’ catalog and end up with a Halloween classic. We’re also partial to the hilarious “There Something Wrong With You,” with its nutty talk of monkey toes, cow fingers and mosquito pies. But “I Put a Spell on You” is a perennial, which is why it’s been covered by artists as different as Creedence Clearwater Revival, Nina Simone, Nick Cave, Them, Bryan Ferry and Marilyn Manson. Rest in peace, you madman.

Bats are plentiful in many parts of the world, and particularly in the limestone caves of Asia and the Pacific, where bat stew or barbecued bat are served at restaurants and street carts. Sexy Mormon Moms' Calendar Stirs Controversy (Includes interview)

The calendar was produced by Chad Hardy. In many ways Hardy was a typical Mormon. He was a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints (LDS) and attended Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, graduating in 2008 with a B.A. in communication studies.

But things are not always what they seem and Hardy is also an entrepreneur, an unrepentant entrepreneur. Last year he produced a calendar entitled, 'Men on a Mission, 2009.' The calendar featured photos of Mormon missionaries in their classic white shirt and black tie. However, each of these photos was accompanied by a beefcake photo of the same missionary topless. For his efforts Hardy had his degree from BYU revoked and he was excommunicated by the LDS.

The Best Way to Cook a Thick Steak - eG Forums

One of the points Ducasse makes is that when you have a piece of meat this good, it's a shame to burn it. He prefers, as do I, to get a good crust on the steak with no charring. Once you char a steak, you're substituting the carbonized flavor of burnt flesh and fat for the, in my opinion, more delicious "roasty" flavor of the Maillard reaction and the beef itself.

Okay, so here's the Ducasse method of making a rib steak, as interpreted by me. This is a 45-minute process, assuming you start with a steak that has been allowed to come up to room temperature or that at least has been out of the refrigerator long enough to take the chill off it. The method starts with a skillet -- in my case cast-iron but any good skillet works fine as does a pot like a rondeau -- heated to a medium heat. The steak is started on its edge. The reason for this is twofold: first, it renders the fat so you're able to cook the steak in beef fat (this echoes Ducasse's principles of flavor reinforcement, which are nearly universal in his cooking); second, it creates an appetizing appearance on the edges.

He was the Most Influential Man Who Never Lived.  Though there were many Marlboro Man models over time until 1999 (factoid: but only three of them succumbed to lungs cancer), the original inspiration for the Philip Morris cigarette advertising campaign came through Life magazine photographs by Leonard McCombe from 1949.

Clarence Hailey Long (above) was a 39-year-old, 150-pound foreman at the JA ranch in the Texas panhandle, a place described as “320,000 acres of nothing much.” Once a week, Long would ride into town for a store-bought shave and a milk shake. Maybe he’d take in a movie if a western was playing. He was described as “as silent man, unassuming and shy, to the point of bashfulness [with a] face sunburned to the color of saddle leather [with cowpuncher's] wrinkles radiating from pale blue eyes.” He wore “a ten-gallon Stetson hat, a bandanna around his neck, a bag of Bull Durhamtobacco with its yellow string dangling from his pocket, and blue denim, the fabric of the profession”. He said things like, “If it weren’t for a good horse, a woman would be the sweetest thing in the world.” He rolled his own smokes.
